Absolute OpenBSD pre-orders now available

No Starch Press now has pre-orders for new Absolute OpenBSD. Order direct from the publisher, and get both the ebook and the paper for one price. If you use the coupon code ILUVMICHAEL you’ll get a discount, and I get a commission on the sale. (Bolded 20130207 because more than one person has said they missed that line.) If you use another coupon code, I still get paid, but not as much. I’m not deeply concerned which way you buy it, so long as you buy it.

Here’s the cover of the new edition. It incorporates art from the first edition, plus a new background.AO2e Cover

On a vaguely related note, I recently saw a link to my blog from a Chinese Unix users message board. Curious, I asked Google Translate what it said. It’s a discussion of the new book, which is awesome. Slightly worrying, though, is that in the translation they repeatedly refer to me as “Great God Lucas” or some variant thereof. I’m hoping that this is an artifact of translation, or some cultural thing I was previously unaware of.

Otherwise, it would seem that I have a cult of worshippers in China, and that I must learn Chinese in order to issue my commands.

Even more tangentially, links within a translated page take you to a translated version of that page. That’s pretty cool.

  1. Chinese word 大神 direct translate to english is “Great God”. “大神 Lucas” honors Lucas is the most respected BSD-related writer in chinese readers.

  2. Enjoyed the 1st Edition a lot and thanks to your coupon code I saved the shipping costs (goes to .at), totally pays off, thanks Michael!

  3. agree with teemu, thanks for the pre-order discount code 🙂 any word on how the pre-order sales are going?

  4. I assume both your OpenBSD and FreeBSD books are targeted at people who feel comfortable using the UNIX command line already?

If so, do you have a book recommendation for learning these basics?

  5. :O Who do the skulls belong to on the cover? Is one Linus Torvalds and the other Bill Gates? Puffy means business this time!

  6. Michael I placed my order with No Starch (with ILUVMICHAEL)! You are a great writer and I have all your books!

  7. I didn’t like the first edition. It was basically the FAQ in book form. It also became outdated quickly.

  8. Sorry to hear that. Not all books work for all people.

Other people liked it enough to demand a second edition. I’d have to tell you “then don’t buy the new one.”

  9. Hello Michael! Do you write a book for NetBSD. You spoke for this about 2 years ago, I think but at the moment there is nothing for this.

  10. Awesome.

I enjoyed the first edition a lot and looking forward to the 2nd. Puffy blowing away!!!

    Thanks, Michael.

  11. Fan-damn-tastic! The first edition was getting pretty worn. I tell myself and others, “If you know this book well, not only will you have a mastery of the OpenBSD OS, you will be well on your way to being a very elite well-rounded UNIX Sys Admin, period.” I look forward to reading it, Micheal. PS You need to promote your discount code in bolder typeface, I aploogize for not reading your announcement closer before placing my order.

  12. Thanks for writing the second edition. I have several of your books and appreciate each one. I’m not a technologist by training but I’ve worked with technology for many years, preferring the BSDs. I had to evaluate a router environment and used your book as a guide to develop my plan. I haven’t used OpenBSD for a while and want to catch up. I expect your book is top notch and help me do just that. Best regards.
